On Skills: People who don't know me well have a hard time believing that I know how to paint, take a photo, edit or knit and actually sew and can make a garment from scratch. I really am about the hands . I'm a kinestethic learner. It does not take me long to learn a motor skill if I watch you do it I am now utilising years of "hobbies" things I did for fun, into something more concrete and putting it all into one. In many ways I'm a jack of all trades, but I really do know how to do those things. I think I hid a lot of it because I felt misunderstood for a long time.
Painting : I did not traditionally learn. I just seem to know what to do with a paintbrush. It was always a hobby. I started to do it seriously this year then got picked up by one gallery and that is how it began. I mean I am still beginning. Some days I like to paint oil, other days acrylic, some days abstract, other days cubist. Where I will go stylistically , techniques; I do not know. There is almost a black out zoning out period when I paint and I'm getting to know that person who paints because in many ways, even after a painting I don't remember how I did it. I once painted a painting pointalism and a friend asked me how I did it. I couldn't remember except that I did it using a toothpick with just the paint I had left.
Favorite artist : I love Picasso and Basquiat and I think stylistically I relate more to Picasso's work than any other artist. He had such a range of styles and I relate to that as I don't feel even with time I will have one style. Plus I love Montmartre and hang out there a lot in Paris. I feel so at peace over there.
Design : One of my first loves. I see design fundamentally. It must have aesthetic, purpose, and function. Otherwise the design has a problem. I don't know when the design element will come into this site as I am behind! and still painting so much!
Art Gang: It is a term I use for the artists. I kinda drew inspiration from Warhol and his factory. And every collaboration is with another artist. So project A the focus was me and the paintings. Project B is on Ben and his photography though I knit the knitwear. I already have the ideas in my head up to F actually but they get bigger and bolder. Some people have already jumped on, but it will take time. I switch roles in the projects and so do others. Maciek shot Project A, he models in Project B. I don't believe we are defined by one singular thing and I will push boundaries.
Art. Creation. Design : 3 Concepts infused into 1 which is the base of everything. I start off with the art but you will see the other 2 concepts tie into the art. I can do all three which is to make art, create , and design. I think it will take people a while to get a grasp of what I'm actually doing. I kinda like it that way.
On Art: When I look at a place like New York City, that is all I see. When I see fashion. where do they have their shows? Museums, galleries, collabs with artist. I mean this is where politics, progress, social commentary stems from too. I think a lot of young people don't invest in art and it is a shame. I have a friend whose biggest regret was not getting a Basquiat piece when he just was selling it early on. If you like the piece, buy it. And who knows, that deal you got may be worth quite a bit in a few years. I just think art captures something that in some ways are pure to me.
Photography : I do not call myself one. I did study it and shot heavily in Junior High. To this day those are my favorite images.
Upbringing : I was born in Paris. My origins are from the Ivory Coast which still has strong ties to France despite its independence. I've lived in Miami, London, New York, and Paris. I think it gave me a real good outlook and understanding on culture and people.
Style : I don't follow trends. I don't know what that means. A trend is something you are going to say what was I thinking 10 years later. But nowadays its like last year is dated .
Fashion : My personal style does not reflect how I design. I love Junya Watanabe, Sacai, and my favorite designer both old Balenciaga and Ghesquiere's Balenciaga era is an obsession for me. I probably design much like I paint. I like strong hard lines, clean and pervasive colors . I also love vintage stuff quite a lot and enjoy the history of fabrics.
Colors : I see colors exceptionally well to the point I can differentiate 20/30 shades of the same color. It is hard to talk colors with people because I arrange them so fast. I also try not to have same color palettes as others though obviously you can't deny that complimentary colors and primary colors give certain this and that. I see patterns in how I paint and how I will even dress myself. Some days I'm like I just painted what I'm wearing! I don't fear colors. I embrace every single one of them and in the shape series you will notice I don't use black often. Something like Antoine's Green is entirely a painting in so many shades of green but given the angles you can think its primed in black.
