On Art : Not all art is good art. I really believe that.
Drawing : I'd be better if I were more patient. I mean I have no talent in that to be honest.
Painting : I always seemed to know what to do with the brush. A lot of it is intuitive. I did a lot of it in solitude. I don't have a style. But you know I'd be naive to say that I don't have influences. But I think when I was at the University of Miami I had gotten a really bad injury during my time as a college athlete. I was in this unbereable physical pain keeping a game face . And so I was painting heavily. I don't know when I really started painting in hindsight. After the 26 letters , this whole thing completes. And I think it should start and it should end much like a book.
Favorite artist : Picasso. I connect to his stuff a lot. I have a lot of stories on that.
Basquiat too but for different reasons. Gifted soul.
Design : One of my first loves. I love to make things. Anything. Everything I design here, I've physically made the prototype. I really did knit and drape Cocoon and the Infinity for example. Some pieces are more art based, others more fashion. I'm aware of which is what. I think like an architect: purpose, function, aesthetic. I love the work of Hiroshi Nakamura. I love his work.
Art Gang: It is a term I use for the artists. Really its everyone. However, I do make it clear- the hands must work. I'm not about the artsy farsty I am a so-called artist. Working with Ben, Maciek , and Erica- you see 4 minds fusing. We talk technical, hand positions, shadows. The same shadows I paint, Ben photographs, Erica moves, Maciek interprets. And it is refreshing to speak the same language despite the fact that we have 4 different art forms . Ben ended up knowing how to drape mid-way, in the end we talked fabrics and production. He learned about design and I learned about photography. I think there is just a comfort and understanding in that.
Art. Creation. Design : There is so much work to be done. I do ask if I can really do this energy wise. A lot of the ideas, shoots, and just collabs are my idea so its a lot. So I design and create art around the themes and subjects. Collaborations are always about the right fusion. I'd love to collab with an artist in Berlin, his graphics are mindblowing but I don't have an idea yet. I have like 50 ideas parked in my brain. Just chilling.
Nicknames : I have so many. But they all tell a story. ACD are my initials but a lot of my friends call me either names. They all complain it is too long. The real story behind what I would have been named is hilarious though.
Photography : I was really good when younger. I had my camera, but I was always in the dark room. I took pictures of trees. I have several cameras. It is absurd that the best thing I enjoy are gadgets. A lot of the photos I take are with my phone actually. I think I will go film if I don't design as much. I respect the craft. Right now the focus isn't that for me anyhow, and I am terribly lazy with film. I am a huge fan of photography though . My favorite photographer is Arnold Newman. If I shot film, I think I would want something of that nature for me personally.
Design : I think design has lost its focus a bit. You know , the consumer is getting smarter. You have to think of the utility of it at a certain point. You will be surprised at some brands that do sell and those that do not. I'm not about quantity, but quality. And you design you construct around the human body. So to me, a designer and a business person are two different things. If you don't have a good design , you don't have a good product. Can a bad product sell? Of course with great marketing. Will it last? No. I think a lot of people want to call themselves designers and artists. It sounds alluring, but not everyone can be good at it, not everyone wants to put the sacrifice. It is a choice, the outcome is up to you. A designer without a portfolio to me is weird. Like in the real world that is the first thing they look at. An artist with no work to show for is weird. An architect with no ideas of constructs is weird to me. I think I saw a video on Karl Lagerfeld and how he drew 1000 sketches , so one summer I said I'll do it too. Your hands get sore, you go crazy , but you get so fast at the end you understand why it makes a difference. You know - you really have to go through the process whether it is school, life, or something else. And I respect that kind of work ethic. I'm old school in that regards.
Paris. New York. Cali : The 3 places I have spent most of my life in. I'm a bit of all 3. People forget I have spent 1/3 of my life overseas. So I'm really a blend of those different cultures and approaches. My accent throws people off all the time and my French doesn't give it away either . But I speak French at home. My entire family speaks French. I was an ESL kid when I first moved to the states. I had no one to talk to . I had the only language that didn't have a buddy to pair up with.
Style : I don't follow trends. I don't know what that means. A trend is something you are going to say what was I thinking 10 years later.
Fashion : I love fashion. I'm a bit apathetic to the whole industry in certain ways. I like to be behind the scene in that , it takes a lot of energy to do all that. And it doesn't define a person. It shouldn't at least. I don't always want to talk about the material stuff. In many ways I don't care. I care if people feel good and hey if they look good too, it is a double bonus. I like to talk about weird things- robots, sharks, just idiosyncratic things.
14: My favorite number. It is lucky. These are my last words. - A.
